Mission Statement

“The mission of the student leader program is to provide students with an opportunity to become self-directed student leaders through developing academic and professional work experience. The student voice and creativity is an integral part to the growth of this position. A cohesive team is developed between the professor, students and community.”

Course Description

Service-Learning student leaders (SL SL) work directly with the community and focus on service-learning outreach projects. In addition, a SL SL is someone who is self-motivated to work independently on projects designed by the professor and gain professional work experience. The student leader’s voice is highly valued and integrated. Their purpose is to assist and shadow the professor in accomplishing duties such as teaching, researching, curriculum development, web development, service-learning outreach, social media, training, conference presenting, publishing, business writing, and much more. Through the course of this program, the student leader may develop a reciprocal partnership with current students in Dr. Perry’s class, Dr. Perry, community partners, professionals, etc.

The student leaders’ voice is at the center of this leadership practicum, and all student leaders should be creative, organized, and able to work on their own and as a team.

For the Communication 339 practicum (student leader program), students will earn three credits (two credits in summer quarter) and work 10 hours per week.
