Bio

Dr. Perry at workDr. Tara B. Perry is an associate professor at Western Washington University. Her background spans three unique parts of the world. Her family is originally from Antigua, West Indies, but she grew up in Canada (living in both Vancouver and Montreal), and she was born in and now teaches in the United States. Teaching, service, and community are driving principles for Dr. Perry, in all that she does.

Dr. Perry received her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, with double minors in Communication and French, from Western Washington University. At Washington State University, Dr. Perry earned her Master’s degree in Television Broadcasting and a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies & Social Thought. She taught at Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow School of Communication for 5 years and has taught at WWU since 2000.

Her courses in the communication discipline teach a variety of skills, including professional, organizational, interpersonal, intercultural, research methods and many more. Several years ago, she traveled to Mexico and helped to build a family home, daycare, and teach art to young children, and she is an active member of the National Congress of Black Women and the National Communication Association. Dr. Perry’s research interests emphasize scholarship of teaching and learning (e.g. service-learning, student learning), student-faculty collaborative relationships, and advocacy for people with silenced voices such as people of color, students with disAbilities, and generation Y.

several hands brought togetherFor over 10 years, Dr. Perry has worked with more than 30 local community agencies and provides professional communication consultant assistance through the courses she teaches.  Dr. Perry was an early adopter of technology in the classroom and now regularly assigns technology based projects to students such as creating their own videos, music, digital portfolios, and conducting group meetings online. She is currently working on her own international documentary which focuses on the importance of community building.
